“Love Comes To Me Robed In Humility,”
“Love Comes To Me Robed In Humility,”
— Maria Yracébûrû, Prayers and Meditations of the Quero Apache
This quote may be my favorite from a book that has great meaning for me. My teacher recommended the book to me twenty years ago, as I now recommend it to you. If you do decide to get it, please feel free to reach out to me, and I’d be happy to chat with you about the structure of the book and how I was shown to work with it.
What does it mean for love to be robed in humility? I really don’t know, but here are some thoughts.
I expect it may mean something different for each of us. While relationships it would seem must be in balance (2nd Commandment), I think humble love focuses not on ourselves but rather on the relationship itself and the person we love. I don’t think humble love incudes, “I did this for you so you owe me.” I don’t think humble love includes “Look at me and how wonderful my love is for you.” Or “World, look at us and how special is our relationship.” No doubt there is often deep love in these cases, but I don’t see it as clothed in humility. Rather, things seem a bit transactional or ego based.
As well, again acknowledging the importance of balance and yes receiving, to focus specifically on the meaning of the word “humility”, I believe what we’re being guided to do is to be very careful about knowing what is best wrong for another person, even a loved one. For example, “I love you, and so I know this is best for you… this is what you should do, think, feel, etc. You’re doing the wrong thing.”
I’ve been repeatedly taught and repeatedly experienced that it is not so easy to know what is best even for ourselves, let alone another person… no matter how much we may love the person and how much insight we may have into the person. Certainly, there our times when we may have a pretty good idea; but I think we’re being asked to remain humble about our perspective and how we might then interact with our loved ones.
And when we and our loved ones do interact with an open-mind and curiosity, this seems to make more room for Creator to show us different ways we might proceed and thereby draw down more light.
